in reading about undergravel jet systems, am i correct in thinking that the same effect could be accomplished by simply using an undergravel filter, and using a water pump to reverse the flow of water into it? and if so, how powerfull should the pump be?

A RUGF will effectively eliminate all dead spots in a tank without causing current issues, that may or may not be an issue depending on what fish and decor you have.

The size power heads you use will be dependent on your substrate and how deep it is. The RUGF will help keep it free of debri by pushing it into the water column to be removed by power filters. The RUGF can also be driven by canister filters.

I would use the uwj system for creating a more river like set up.

Bob I'd have to disagree, rugf's if used with any gravel on top will still leave the deadspots in the tank, the flow even if strong will be partially blocked by the gravel, where as the ugj has no obstruction and acts basically like a powerhead with regulated flow (depending on the amount of outputs).

Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages though.

I haven't experienced that, provided the substrate is thin and the powerheads large. The jets will circulate the water but not help clean all of the substrate.

I have a 35 gallon hex and for years ran a traditional UGF arrangement (with a powerhead). About 1-1/2 years ago, I changed to RUGF using a new powerhead and a sponge pre-filter. The water remains crystal clear with no algae, no ammonia or nitrates. Previously, when I cleaned the gravel, it was filled with all manner of "junk". Now, the gravel stays very clean. Personally, I'm a big fan (at least on this tank).
