I'm moving my white clouds to a coldwater tank, so I will have a 20 gallon with just two platy and six amano shrimp. I have been wanting to try rummy nose tetra for a while now. My ph is 6.8 and the tank has been well established for a few months. I keep reading that rummy nose tetra are delicate though. Can anyone tell me exactly how they are delicate?

The rummy-nose tetra is an excellent fish for the community tank once it is adjusted to its surroundings, but this initial adaptive phase can be a bit longer than for some fish. In the meantime, it tends to be sensitive to water quality, so test this frequently. It does not take well to addition of salt and many chemical additives, and pH fluctuations can kill it. It must be kept with at least 3 members of its own species, or else it will sulk in the corner and show signs of stress. Healthy species will adapt eventually to a well-planted tank and school actively in and out of every corner of the aquarium, their noses glowing brightly. In fact, they are some of the most ideal "schoolers", and really enjoy the company of their own kind. They will also be completely peaceful towards other fish.

I've been having a shool of 6 rummy nosed tetras in a 46 gal planted tank for more than 2 years and found that they are very hardy fish in the right environment. They have survived a bad case of ick breakout that had killed half of my cardinal population in the same tank.

I have not tested my water for years but I've been changing 20% of water every week, and the tank has plenty of lived plants, other peaceful schooling fish (cardinals, glow-light, neons, etc). In other words, nothing that would stress them out, and their "noses" are always bright red.

Okay, thank you! :D I fell in love with these fish on a visit to the Amazon Rising exhibit in the Shedd Aquarium. I'm looking forward to getting some.

My weekly visit to one particular LFS had rummy nose's with ich on them. :(
Almost all the other fish looked okay. :(
