I have read that rummy nose tetra are good for helping you keep an eye on your tank. If they are happy and the water quality is good, their noses will be very red. Well, I have a small school of 7 and 5 of them have truly amazing red noses. I had no clue they would get that red when I saw them in their rather washed out state at the LFS. Their red rivals that of my cardinals. Anyway, that is true of 5 or them, but not of the other two. It's two of the larger one's who always seem to keep more of a peachy colored nose. Those two don't seem to act different in any way. They feed and school well and show no signs of illness or disease.

My tank is now well cycled and every time I check it I have 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites. I don't regularly test for nitrates, but I do a PWC of about 33% once a week. Last time I checked nitrate before a WC it was at about 10.

So, do some of these guys just not get as red a nose, or should I worry about them?

I am thinking that the lighter, larger ones might be female. I am not sure but I have a couple like that in my tank.

Don't worry about it. I guess majority does rule in this situation. And they CAN be just female

There seems to be 3 different types of Rummy Noses, I recently learned this myself trying to identify what you've mentioned. I have about 25 or so in my 120 gal and there isn't so much a variation in color or shade as much as of how much of their head is covered for me. It's very interesting but just the same they are all healthy I've had them for over 2 yrs. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Here's one of mine some have bigger triangles others barely have red past the eyes.

Wow -great info guys! And beautiful picture JAY! Those little guys are hard to capture on film.

Yes, I had just read that there are actually a few slightly different species that all go by the same name. Apparently, the tail stripes vary a bit too?

Now that I think about it, I'll bet those two are from a different group. I originally ordered my rummy nose from liveaquaria.com. However, all but two were either DOA or died within a few days. I then upped the school by 5 more when I finally found a good LFS about an hour away that actually carried them. So, it's very likely that the "peachy nose" tetra are the two originals from that mail order group and are slightly different from the newer guys.

very possible

I actually got a picture showing one of the one's with the lighter nose hanging with two of the redder fish. It's not the quality of Jay's shot, but I think you can see the difference. The peachy one is on top:

Ahhh. hard to tell from the pic. but it looks like you have two different types of Rummy Noses if that line in the middle of the body of the top fish is more pronounced than the other ones. I meant to add this link before where you can compare the markings.

Tell me what you find. I'm interested in know if you can identify that they are different.
