Run filter sock 24/7?

Is it ok to run a filter sock 24/7? It is a 100 micron filter sock...


The only downside I can see is that it would remove beneficial life from the water column...

Any input?

In the past I had been pretty anal about not having some type of mechanical filtration. I generally ran sock/sock type filtration/a home brewed floss type filter at different points in time. It was truly amazing what would gather on it. Lately however (after much reading) I have landed myself on the other side of the street with a more natural approach and don't use it at all. When I did run them it was 24/7 until it needed cleaning.

Its something that i have personaly never used, always gone for the natural approach of letting the live and sand bed do the job...

If left unchecked, it can become a pita..

Ya im thinking about taking out the one i put in last night... It has already caught all sorts of junk...

But i haven't ran one in 4 months, so i think ill stick to what i was doing before...

I think it is fine but you'll want a few of them so you can change them out and wash throughly. I ran my last sump with one but the new sump isn't really set up for one.

You don't need it, but if you prefer a cleaner water column it will help.

As was already said, just make sure you wash and change it regularly so it doesn't become a nitrate trap.

Ya i ended up removing it... It had already trapped a ton of crud, but I just feel like letting my tank do it naturally...
