Rushing the holidays

ONe good thing about being a canadian is we have our thanksgiving in Oct. Then comes halloween then christmas. I dont' think i woudl like having thanksgiving so close to christmas. I like having it spread out, gives you something to look forward to.

Around here christmas decorations go up at the stores the day after halloween. Its sad really. Halloween stuff was out at the beginning of sept. I like decorating early but that is rediculous. At my house we decorate the tree after my brothers birthday(dec.7) my dad usually puts the lights up around that time too. We also leave the tree up untill after new years, we are all too lazy to take it down :)

I like decorating early but not too early(not as early as nov.). I never understood the people that bought a christmas tree on christmas eve and took it down the day after christmas. WOuldn't you want to enjoy it longer?

Call me a major league humbug if you will, but I can't stand anything about the holidays (any of them) and can't wait until January 2nd when we can put all of this cr^p behind us.

In defense of CVS and other retailers, Christmas is HUGE in terms of retail sales. Some stores to 25% or better of their annual business just at Christmas. So, they do it up big. But why so early?

Well, there's really not much to sell in the way of Thanksgiving so they have to go straight from Halloween to Christmas. And really, the day after Halloween there's no need for the candy and costumes to take center stage so they come down and Christmas goes up.

Since Christmas accounts for a huge amount of sales, it also accounts for a huge amount of inventory. Having worked for CVS I can attest that they begin receiving stock for Christmas in June or July. So, they put out what they can before Halloween is even over just to start making more room in the stock room.

Its a crazy time of year for retail so I don't really blame them for getting started early.

That being said, I don't see the reason we need Christmas music in October! The stuff has to be in stores and Santa has to be at the mall for those early birds who want little Johnny's current Santa photo on this years Christmas cards but there's no reason I have to hear bing Crosby this early!

Part of my problem with Christmas is directly related to what you posted Tom. The mere fact that Christmas represents 25% of sales proves to me that the holiday is much more a commercial event than a religious one for far too many people. Truth be told, I'm an atheist. But I feel that if Jesus had known ahead of time what his birthday would be turned into by his modern day followers he would have preached against celebrating it. What some people pay for decorations alone would feed scores of hungry people.

Sorry if I've offended anyone. I sure don't want to get into any heated religious debates, I know that's not what this board is about. So I'll get off my soapbox now and won't post again on this thread.

You know T, SINCE you don't have much time, I could always come down to pick it up, ;)

Tyler you answered your own question--you are on vacation so the SO and family want your help while you have the time to give it to them, sad fact of vacations lover boy.
As for the xmas decorations being out earlier than before I really don't see that every year the closer halloween gets the more they compact the stuff and start on the xmas isles.
Decorating Lila--yep we put up the tree and a few decorations the weekend of Thanksgiving (have since I was a little kid I remember the whole neighborhood doing it that way growing up) and my oldest 2 sons go over to my mom and dad's and help them with their lawn decorations, my dad leaves his lights up all year since my mom does not want him climbing all over the roof twice every year. All he has to do is turn them on check for blown bulbs get what he needs to replace them and do it only once.
My hubby and I do not decorate the outside of the house so I don't have to worry about that (not cause I don't want to just don't have the room to keep all that stuff all year, I would love to have a dozen or more lawn decorations, that would be great).
Sensi--retail drives a good part of the economy, soooooooooooooooo. I really like I said above don't notice it being any earlier than it has always been, it is just that when you grow up and have kids that you seem to notice it more (cause the kids are bugging mom and dad for months about that great new toy they want from santa) :)

i think actually that the way america celebrates christmas is cool and it is spreading
here in the uk more and more houses are putting external decorations up

mine looks great

but our home deckies go up on the first opportunity in december this is considered to be too early by many though so we are not quite where we should be yet

we are not exactly religious so we are in it for the commercialism

i love it and so do the rest of my family

i would love thanksgiving it is an excuse to start celebrating earlier :dance

to qualify what I am about to say, my dad was a migrant worker and my family camped where ever the treeplanting took us in the southeast. so I saw many a small town over the 4 or 5 seasons I remember while we were treeplanting.

I remember small towns where the decorations didn't start getting put up untill december 1st. None of the small towns started putting up christmas decorations untill after the week of thanksgiveing. But when I was 7 in '85 I remember seeing in one town the workers putting up christmas decorations the day befor thanksgiveing and my whole family making commments about it being so not right.

and not just that the decorations where going up befor thanksgiveing day but that the workers didn't have that time off to go be with family since it was so close to thanksgiving.

Tom ~ my brother is the manager at the galleria mall cvs and yes, they started getting their christmas stock at the end of july! that's just nutso! I totally agree though, NO CHRISTMAS MUSIC until at least Dec 1st.

Sensei ~ I agree with you, in a way. Christmas is WAY over commercialized. However, the people who are religious still consider it a holy-day (as opposed to just a holiday), and so I see nothing wrong with that... they go to church, they have nativities in their houses, they give to the poor/needy extra around the Christmas season, etc.... we are not religious but still celebrate Christmas. Why? Because it's a festive season! We also have a nativity in the house (gift from my mother, it's very pretty, and I DID after all go to catholic schools my entire life, and DO understand the meaning of the day), and although we don't volunteer at a soup kitchen or anything like that, we do donate to toys for tots, as well as shoeboxes for kids. My best friend is Jewish, and she and her husband celebrate both Hanaka (sp? we've been friends for almost 20 years and I still can't spell it) and Christmas! So BAH to you :D
