they may prohibit it, but i dont really care. i dont think a cop or dnr officer would care about a small piece of wood.....its not like theres gunna be more in the future.
Your post has given me a h...l of an idea. The next time I am in Far West Texas near Alpine I will search for Cypress driftwood. This would be awesome.
To answer your question regarding preparation (and this is probably overkill but describes what I have done).
[1] Place the wood in a mildly boiling chlorine solution for 24 hours.
[2] Rinse the wood in mildly boiling tap water for 24 hours.
[3] Scrub the wood with a pot scrubber and rinse.
[4] Place the wood in a mildly boiling chlorine solution for 24 hours.
[5] Rinse the wood in warm tap water to which 4X Prime has been added for 48 hours.
[6] Remove the wood and place in the tank.
*If the wood is too large to fit into a large pot I would try the bathtub with water as hot as possible. (I have not tried this bathtub process.)
An easier to understand listing of the hardness of typically available (geographic regions influence the "available") hardwoods.

BTW Folks:
I am only familiar with these web sites due to designing (or at least currently attempting to) a short and low wooden bridge which will be subject to truck loading across a golf course swale.
