If rinsing is a problem, I would go with pool filter sand. I would still try to give it a quick rinse in a bowl first, but if not, that's probably fine. From what I hear, play sand is much messier, and I wouldn't want a huge cloud in a tank that already has fish in it.

The idea of changing cartridges several times might work, but I would be more worried about the motor than the cartidges.
 
I always and the sand I need in an empty tank...fill with water to a half inch over the sand....let settle over night...then slow fill the next day with the incoming water hitting a plate...never had a cloudy issue...I think too many folks have no patience and fret the small crap.
 
I just pick up those bog bags for like five bucks at HomeDepot...Rinse it in a bucket.

pool filter sand is even better, you only rinse it once and its cheaper

I paid 2.10 for a 50lbs bag of Sterilized playsand at Homedepot. How much is Filter sand
