i have a betta that has a curved spine, looking at him from the top, he his flosting on his side and is having problems swimming. I put a mix of melafix and primafix in him (it is at the stage where meds are definitely required--for all you med haters). Should i put him down? or should i let it take the course and pray he comes out of it?

also if it comes to the point that he stops eating and i have no other choice... what method of euthanasia would be best? With that i mean least painless and fastesr for the fish and myself?

(btw, i am teary eyed, this is hard for me, please do not think that i am wanting to do this, i am not, in fact i will be paying my roommate to do it if it comes to that)

I use the freezer method. A container of tank water and the fish in the freezer. Probably not the *best* option but I just can't bring myself to do one of the smashing methods.

Hi There, sorry to hear about your betta :(
Some deformities are sometimes caused from a vitamin deficiency, usually vit. C and something else. I can't remember exactly, but it could also be bacterial infections.
I agree, the quickest and most painless for the fish would be the "smashing" method, but it's not pretty. I also use the freezer method, though I don't think it's painless....freezing to death slowly isn't great I'm sure, but it's the only way I could bring myself to euthanize a fish...blood and me don't get along that great.. :o

Sorry about your betta. I'd euthanize him with clove oil (available at most pharmacies). Place him in a container of tank water, add a few drops of the oil and he'll fall to sleep. Then place the container in the freezer to ensure he's gone. It's fast, supposed to be painless to the fish (it's an anesthetic) and bloodless.

I,d just do the freezer meathod. I tried vodka and clove oil but they both seemed to be traumatic for the fish. They trashed around alot, they did NOT just go to sleep. I have an albino cory with a really crooked spine, he's almost folded in half. He's been like that for more than 6 months and is happy and active. Give the beta some more time. if he's still eating he may come out ok.
