That's about as senseless as it gets, mainly due to it being one of the most defenseless creatures kept as pets. The 'rival' store theory does at least lead one to be able to speculate they would know what the bare minimum substance needed would be. You just can't operate a store without having security cameras.
the joys of being in New Zealand, never heard of such a crazy thing to do!! guess we lack in fish shops there are like two decent ones in my whole city, although our cities arent even a town on a world scale. that aside, to kill thousands of dollars worth of fish is pretty weird thing to do, if the guys have insurance they can claim back and replace everything, so what does the killer get out of it? watching the shop haveabout a months of inconvienience and giving the shop publicity?, turns out to be a bit of a win for the shop, lots of dead fish aside..
im putting cameras around my tanks, aint no one going to touch my babies!!
I know it's absolutely terrible
And unfortunately the fish had absolutely nowhere to go at all...
The owners called police (they released an official statement on another forum)
and the police were there in about 10 minutes...They were ordered to try and save as many fish / corals as humanly possible...but TO NOT empty the water in the tanks...for obvious reasons
Last thing I read the police were draining the tanks one by one to analyze the contents of the water
They still don't know exactly what the chemical was
Only things I have heard are "Smelled like bleach"
Which could be a number of household / industrial cleaning products...or maybe something much more potent
Whoever did this went straight to the most expensive tank in the store and dumped the chemical directly into that tank
The centralized system they have unfortunately went through all the SW tanks...The corals...
They also lost about 400 FW Fish when I spoke to one of the owners...so I'm assuming the person went and dumped the other half of the bottle or whatever he used into a very expensive FW tank...which eventually spread
I'm sure the casualties are still rising in number a couple days later
