the guy where i buy my fish said SAE are illegal to import in canada and you cant get them here?

Try otocinclus cats. I've got one...just one...in my 100gal tank, and he has made short work of any and all algae on the sides of the tank, plus all the plumbing. He even went to town on some of the hair algae on my giant vals. Amazing what that little guy can do.

They are GREAT for "normal" temperature aquariums, but our Discus tank at around 85 degrees F, is not good for the little Otto cats...
Ottos are smaller than SAE's. Not that it's a problem, it's just that they don't grow to 4 to almost 5 inches.

SAE's are Siamese Algae Eaters and can do well in warmer waters as I have found out. They are hard to find, at least I can say that for central Florida.
We had to order ours 'online'..
SAE's are confused with aggressive CAE's -- the common Chinese Algae Eater.
Spend you money on SAE's as they are docile and do a better job at eating the algae!

SAE's have a stripe "all the way through the tail".. The 'cheaper' - 'not as good' CAE's have a stripe that stops at the beginning of the tail, and don't let any pet store owner tell you different. The CAE's cost less, and don't work as well in the aquarium due to aggressiveness and lack of 'interest in algae'.

It's true; been there, done it...

They are sold regularly here in Winnipeg .. ...
Over the years, I'm believing that Florida has some of the worst LFS's in the world....

My opinion is that Ottos don't work in 84+ degrees of water temperature. The other water parameters, I'm am not sure of, but these are great fish to have in a tank... Salinity is another factor I have no answer on..

You also have a higher/harder pH from necessary additions for alot of Africans--dolomite, fluorite, crushed coral, rift lake salts if necessary. Just do a little searching. . .
