SAE's

I just discovered that the fish I thought were Flying Fox, sold to me as flying fox, are in fact true sae's. I'm so thrilled. I've been searching for these everywhere, and after googling the flying fox info. I sat down and looked at my foxes today, and surely, they are sae's. The dark ragged line thru the tail, and the brownish upper body above the dark stripe. D'oh!!!!

Oh joy! Oh joy! (I've had these guys a month and they've been grooming the plants like nuts.) I did not know what I had, and the lfs told me they don't eat algae, but something told me they were wrong.... and they were

Can anyone tell me where a person might could mail order an SAE? I've been looking all over for one, and nobody seems to be able to get one for me.

I had nearly the exact same experience! My 'Flying Fox' turned out to be a SAE. Mine doesn't seem to eat all that much algae, though i've kept the tank pretty well fed so he doesn't need to eat all that much. he's done great at scavenging the flakes that make it to the bottom. he also LOVES dead brine shrimp that make it to the bottom as well!

I went to the LFS that sold them to me and talked at length about the subtle differences in the 2 and I then we looked through their species book and found the two. i'm very curious if they will change the name on the tank now that they know....i doubt it.

i'd still like to get a flying fox of my own though. they sound neat.

I remember asking them if they were the algae eaters. They didn't understand, and my French is not the best and I couldn't say siamese algae eater. Mangeur de algae, but they still didn't get it. And said nope, they don't eat algae, so I figured they were the tru flying fox, but I noticed the dark line to the tail, and I tried to tell the guy and the girl who work ther that there are different species. But they insisted, nope, it doesn't eat algae. They had at least 30 of them, lil babies, in 2 separate tanks.

I just went along thinking they were not sae's, until today when I decided to look them up online. I was curious because they spend all day grooming the plants, but will nibble flakes or tubifex at times.

I kept running back to my tank to double check against the pics I found. Yes, the are sae's!!

No I haven't, but it looks like a good place. They warn you to order more sae's than you need however, because they are sensitive to shipping and there could be some loss. It looks like a good store with good information. I'd call them and see...

If you order let people on here know how it goes. I live in Canada and therefore, can only order dry goods from them, or pay 35.00 for a helath certificate to cross the border. But they have some interesting products in the CO2 area.
