i just found some sae's at a lfs. they have them labled as algae eating sharks. what is a good price for these guys, and can they school together? i have seen many people say yes and others say no. i also checked several articles to make sure they were sae's and not flying foxes or other imitators.

It depends on whether or not they are the real thing. I got the "False Siamensis", which looks close to the SAE.

Here's a great link w/ some good info:

Algae Eaters

I put 3 of these imposters into a 38-gallon planted tank, and all they ever did was fight with each other and not eat much algae at all. I left the 2 smaller ones in that 38-gallon tank, and transferred the biggest, rowdiest one (who got quite fat by eating fish flakes) to the 100-gallon tank.

In short, that big False Siamensis didn't do a thing to control algae in my big tank, either. So, I bought a little otocinclus affinis (oto cat), and inside of a month the sides of my big tank, the plumbing, and most of the plants were clean of algae.

I felt like the guy who bought a watchdog to protect the house, only to have the dog just sit and watch the burgulars take everything out of the house! Still, the False Siamensis is a handsome fish and does add some movement to the aquarium.

I have a few of the true SAE and I think they rock. IF they are real ones, IME they should be kept in at least groups of 3. Mine do hang out together and school around together.

At feeding time they do beg for food and eat a lot, but they also do a great job on the algae as well.

Just my experience with them,

A few dollars is a fair price. They do fine alone or in groups- I have them both ways.

TTA, that is a really beautiful tank. At least I'll know what to look for, now, when I go hunting for an SAE. I'll still keep the False Siamensis, as they really do have character.

N/A make sure that the stripe goes through the tail, that is a true SAE. :D

I have a school of eight in my 125g. No roudyness, but I think they'd just as soon eat fish food as algae.

The foreground is dwarf hairgrass. I had to put all my SAEs into the tank to battle a bba outbreak caused when one of my lights burned out and it took me a week to get a replacement. Once they did their thing, they were spread back out into other tanks.
