Safe Ich med for Clown Loaches?

i have had great success treating loaches for ich with salt and heat. i started with half a teaspoon of salt per gallon and increased to one tsp per gallon. i increased the temp to 86.

I agree with BKS. Raising the temp will kill Ich if you raise it high enough other wise it speeds the change of the Ich parasites life cycle from the cyst stag to the 3 day swimming stag. It is at this stag that the "swimmers" are poisoned by the salt. There is lots of info online regarding dose, temps and fish that do not tollerate salt. Salt is a no no for snails.

man I love how everyone helps
this is such a great community...no one pushing products...or trying to get me to buy something I don't need...where does that sound familiar? OH EVERY LFS I'VE EVER BEEN TO!

but the garlic is working just to re-iterate lol
I will start my salt treatment tomorrow morning and end it the following tuesday just to be safe...temp is at 86 degrees and we'll keep our fingers crossed

I think I will start with a 1/2 teaspoon per gallon and do 1 teaspoon per gallon by wednesday  BYE BYE ICH!

I'm assuming I shouldn't do any water changes during this time? to keep the consistency of salt to water?

Hey Tay, I didn't see you mention the size of your tank. I was just wondering.

it's a 29g standard dimensions (i know it's small -_- but I'm in a 1 bedroom apartment with 2 children and a wife lol and she won't let me get a bigger one until we move in 5 months)

after I move I'm getting a 125g tank

thankfully the loaches are still small enough to not be stunted yet as they are only about 3 inches for the 5 of them and the big guy is 5 inches

hopefully they won't grow TOO much in the next 5 months...one thing for sure is I guarantee they will adore their new home...I'm gonna make it a clown loach specific tank as I want to get to the bottom of this breeding mystery...it's interesting to me

you can always count on Melody to get back to your problem lol
If I ever win the lottery or come across a huge chunk of change...I swear to god I will buy you whatever tank you want for all the help you've given for not only on this issue...but the ADF problem I was having also

My ADF are doing great...there's one female that is way smarter than the others and you can tell just by looking at her
she eats so well...I wish all my frogs were like that
the other frogs you almost have to hand feed because they just don't understand what feeding time is...and the guppies devour everything before they even come to see what dropped

Well, I won't say anything about it... no wait... I will... ;)

Well, .... I'm not an expert here, and I'm not going to fuss at you too much :lipssealedsmilie:, but I have learned that it is very important to have a big einough tank for you critters.... having said that... if you can't get a big tank right now then you really need to keep it ulta pure.:)

I read, I'm not sure if it was here on AC or during some of my other research, that for fish in a tank that is too small, it is more than just the fact that the fish are still small right now, that you need to consider.

They put out some kind of chemical or pheremone, or something like that, in response to their tank size and number of other fish in there with them, that their bodies recognise as a message that they are in tight quarters, so to speak, some kind of biochemical feedback, as it were, and this starts to work on their development pretty quick.

I may have read this in one of the threads in the Temperate and Coldwater Forum, where the goldfish experts have been advising others about the size requirements of goldfish, or in one of the other many articles I've read while doing research.

Nevertheless, if you can't get them a bigger home right now, I think if you do your utmost to do water changes every day, or overfilter, or both, even when the params look good, maybe the biochemical messengers won't have a negative impact on your fish. I'm afraid that 5 months is a pretty long time.

Another option is to get one of those huge sterilite containers at Wallyworld and make a temporary home for you loaches. Of course you'd have to have good fltration and heat just like you would with a big tank anyway.

You may not have room in your present living quarters for that, but I thought I'd mention it.:)

I'm glad your froggies are doing well. Mine are so fat they look like little Sumo wrestlers without the funny looking britches. :grinyes:

I was always assuming that since I got my tanks to be honest

Originally if you remember I had like 15 gold / zebra danios, 4 cory's and the frogs
Since I got the first 2 CL's (and they were extremely skittish since the get go and the fish keeper where I purchased them warned me about that...he had the same problem) they were just hiding constantly...So i got another 4 CL's to keep them company and they were extremely happy

About a week later I sold all my zebra and gold danios to someone in toronto for $10 just to get them out of the tank in the case they would contribute more to the waste in the tank

at the moment all I have in there is the 6 CL's and 4 cory's for cleanup (and the tank is 24x12x18h)

is it really that bad? and if it that bad...what about the 5 oscars that are in my LFS in a 15g that are at least 6 inches long and about 4 inches in girth...shouldn't they be dead? or will they never grow any more than that because of the conditions/size of the tank?

remember too I've had my carbon out for a month now...which could be contributing to that

what do you suggest to do at this point? I should really take some pics of my apartment so I can show you what I'm dealing with

Kudos to you, Tay, for rehoming your other fish. That takes a lot of work and hassle, and a lot of people would just disregard the necessity.

I really do know that you care about your fish and are trying to do everything for them to keep them healthy and happy. You have worked hard for your fish, and I don't think anyone would dispute that you have the "right stuff" to be a great fishkeeper.

I don't have enough experience, myself, to be able to tell you how much of an impact the tank size will have on the CLs over the next five months. One of the mods, like RBishop, or Vicious_Fish, or Star_Rider, or really any of them, or some of the more experienced fishkeepers can give you more valuable information regarding that.

I think keeping the water clean is the first priority. Now that you're not using a medication you can put carbon back in the filter, but I've read it needs to be changed out about every couple of weeks at the most, sooner maybe, to be really effective.

The main thing will be just doing water changes, using Prime, not over feeding, general good tank hygiene.

The Oscars at the lfs.... that's a crying shame. One thing I'll say is... they may be holding them for someone that has bought them, or they may have a big turnover.

My lfs had an enormous Red Devil (south american cichlid) that was just frighteningly beautiful, but he was at least 16" long in about a 29 gallon. I asked "Edna", as subtly as I could, how long he had been in that tank. She said, "Oh, he's been there a couple of days. A customer ordered him and is coming in today to get him." (She talks and sounds just like Billiy Bob Thornton in the movie "Slingblade"....even adds the "uh huh" at the end of her sentences) But, I digress....

Anyway, I was relieved to hear it, and, sure enough, when I went back the next day he was gone. Maybe that's what's happening at your lfs, at least I hope so, because that is an unconscionable situation for those fish if it is not a temporary one.

I do understand about the space issue, I'm trying to figure out where to put a 40 gallon breeder that I want.

I would start a new thread in General Freshwater, and ask the question.

Don't get your feelings hurt if someone is less than tactful with you, some people do get bent out of shape and open mouth before engaging brain. Your intentions are good and everyone will know that.

I would title it "Tanks size help for Clown Loaches" or something like that. Preface your questions by acknowledging that you realize now that you have a tank that is not as big as you need for the CLs, and that you have nursed them through a case of Ich and want to do everything in their best interest, but you have a few months before you can get the 125 gallon for them.

I'm on your side Tay, and rooting for you, I know you will do everything you can to keep those adorable clowns healthy and happy.

LMAO @ Billy Bob hahahaaa

that was gold me and my wife were in tears

GOOD NEWS

I came home and all the clown loaches were out of the cave and are still schooling outside 1 hour later...I have never ever seen them ever do that since I've got them...maybe garlic is the trick I'm not sure...but if it ain't broke don't fix it I guess...So I'll keep this up and maybe he can fight off those last few spots with his immune system

MORE GOOD NEWS

I've convinced the wife to get a 55g this weekend...I know it's not the 125g I want but it is a piece of my 4 tank collection that I had intended on getting anyways

question is...do I go all out and get the 125g now? (maybe I can convince her to do it...it's only 2 more feet of length right? lol)

or just stick with the 55g for the next 5 months until I move?

what do you think?

I'd try to go for the big boy.

Sweet talk her....Romance her... buy her some flowers.... better yet... tell her you'll do the dishes, lol.

Great news about the Clowns. They are so funny, they are named so appropriately aren't they.

I'm a little cautious about the Ich. I'm not sure I would ignore any Ich in the tank, though I did see a thread today where Pinkertd, who is a mod, said she was going to let her fish's immune system deal with the few Ich spots she had left.

I think it's wonderful that they are obviously feeling pretty good, healthwise, and happy.
