What is the likelyhood of salamanders/newts escaping from a tank given that it has a standard hood with minimal openings? I know that inverts can find ways and such, but would salamanders slip through something that is maybe less than 1 cm wide? Would they have the desire and ambition to leave the confines of the water and crawl up up and away or are they not the explorer type? (fire belly newt and similarly-sized amphibeans are what I'm refering to)

I have no doubts that they could have slid through a 1cm hole, they are exploring =) Why is there a 1cm whole? You dont have a standard screen lid that fits tightly?

well I havent made any changes to the hood yet, nor have I gotten a screen or the actual critters (planning ahead). I forgot to mention that the hole will be plugged mostly by a power cord so unless they pull some Mission Impossible-type moves, they wont be going anywhere.

The reason for the hood and electrical is because I want to try and grow live plants and possibly some small fish. I was thinking that if newts dont explore I could have some other, more open top setup. Kind of thought they would try and escape, but just wanted to make sure.

Yeah especially when you first get them, their not adjusted so they climb and ya know just dont act settled. Especially if you have live plants, they could climb up the plants. But you cant get a screen hood, with a light over it?

okk gotcha, you could always put the screen under the hood? thats what i do for my firebelly toad tank. I like them to have a light, and i havent gotton around to buying the little things that just hold the lightbulb, but i had a hood for it because it was once a fish tank so thats their light hehe...i couldnt just use the hood because the back was open for the filters, and the front, where you drop food in is stuck up so they had 2 escape holes so i just put a screen on under the hood.
