Hello all,

I am curious does the salinity in a sw tank really matter too much. The reason I am asking is I would like to keep my sw salinity level at 1.030, would this harm anything, or would it be just fine at this level? I want to because I have tested real ocean water and it was at 1.030. Would everything be alright with this level? corals, fish, snails etc..? Also, I have a 55 gal tank what kind of lighting would be the best for me? I want some corals, but not many.

Accually The salinity in the Ocean is really around 1.025-1.027. Im guessing to have gotten the reading you got you tested water from the beach. Salinity that high would not be good for corals or fish for very long. I have a 55 gal right now and keep my salinity 1.025 and everything seems to be perfectly fine this way. Also on my 55 gal i have a current USA orbit light. It is rated for aquariums of about 55 gallons, and i have had no problems out of the light.

the salinity of the ocean depends on where you test it. it may be 1.030 where you tested, but the reefs where most of our livestock comes form is between 1.025-1.026

I would not have the salinity at that high of a level. It could be very detrimental to everything in your tank. It would be best to keep the salinity between 1.025-1.027 if you want to keep coral. If it is just the fish that you want then you can have it as low as 1.022.
