Salsa with a side of pain

Note to self: no chili pepper wreaths for Rowangel

yeah, latex gloves are good.

Jalapeno juice in the eye is definitely painful but it's a mother's caress compared to a jellyfish tentacle in the eye. One of those will make you consider suicide to make the pain stop.

I know coating your mouth with peanut butter helps (oils to oils type thing), but I don't know if it would do much for skin. I've never had my skin burn from cutting jalapenos. But I can relate to your ice water. I once pulled a 4 cup measure of boiling water out of the microwave and spilled it on my hand. I carried around a jug of ice water with my hand in it for most of a day.

I have never had a problem with jalapenos burning my hands, but I did once get some of this http://www.hotsauceworld.com/bl3amrepeex.html on my hand. I have never felt a burn that bad in my life. No wonder I had to sign a waiver to buy the stuff. If you want to compare it to Tabasco. Tabasco sauce has a scoville rating of ~5000, Blair's 3am has a scoville rating of ~2,000,000. That is not even the hottest sauce they make.

Rowangel, I feel your pain (well, not literally because it sounded REALLY painful). I am a walking collection of skin allergies. I'm not allergic to anything I eat, but most things that touch my skin will irritate it. Hence, I take Benadryl almost everyday. For instance, did you guys know they make bottles of 100 Benadryl pills? I keep 2 of these bottles in my house, so I basically have antihistamines on tap :D Lucky me.

One time I got stung by mud hydra and my hand swelled up and burned like you described. And yes, the showering made it so much worse! I found that soaking it in warm epsom salt solution really helped. Not only did it bring down the swelling, but I think it denatured the proteins responsible for the reaction I was getting. I really think it was the epsom, because warm water by itself truly made it worse and not better.

I do know that it's possible to die from eating Jalapenos, because most people will automatically react badly to the extreme spiciness.

Anyway, I'm glad that horrible ordeal is over for you, girl.

Hey, plah, I feel ya babe!! I've had sensitive skin all my life--I can remember being like 5 years old and my thirifty (thanks to skinflint dad) mom made most all our clothes--she'd haul my sister and I around to fabric barns, and the air was rendolent with formaldehyde fumes so strong my eyes would immediately start to burn upon entry, throat would partially close up, and I'd start to get welts on my arms and legs. The skin allergies have continued to now, not always predictable!! But I've bought "Benadryl" by the 100 bottle for several years--try WalMart, they have their house "Equate" brand in 100's for much less!!! Saves me every month, as I take it every day, too. Although I must admit jalapenos never caused a ruckus--generally man-produced noxious chemicals, or stuff in lotions, whatever. And great to hear about the Epsom salts, just in case. . . . . I keep laughing about the chef with the burning. . . . . parts (not funny to him, but a great story. I had a hippy friend who lived in a cabin w/boyfriend, no mod cons, used poison oak to wipe her hiney at a field party one night--needless to say . . . . . )

Rowangel, please don't do that again!!!

Wow...no way in hell would I touch that stuff! Wow, and I was so surprised at the pain one little jalapeño caused me...

ooooh, ouch. Did it swell?

Thanks everyone for the comments. When doing cure research, both my roommate and I were so surprised to see how many people had similar experiences with the peppers. I had also bought habaneras at the farmers market, but at the last minute decided not to put them in for my family’s sake (my family can be a weenie with hot salsa). I am now SOOOO glad I didn’t, because these are worse than jalapeños and actually caused massive blisters on one woman’s hands…I can’t imagine. Some people reported going to the ER, which in most cases was not very helpful. I can not imagine the pain of getting it in ones eye or, gasp, privates!!! Ouch.

How the heck could I have not been aware of the massive power of jalapeño juice on skin before?!
