Salt and Plants

over the years i have added salt to my planted tanks ands at other times i have not. overall, the plants seem to have grown better without it than with it. besides, for the longest time i havent used it. so in my experience salt is a good additive for the fish but overall had mixed results with fish.

u mean mixed results with the plants? When you did add salt to a planted tank it didn't kill any plants? How much salt did you add?

The main question is why do you want to add salt?

Plants do not like salt, a tiny amount perhaps, but that's normally already in the tap/tank at some level.

I think you will get much more use doing a larger weekly water change for the fish health than adding salt, it's more for disease prevention issues etc.

i was keeping a pair of convicts in my tank, so i was told by a freind who seemed to know his stuff that salt is good for the fish, but would have little effect on the plants. i added it and the fish thrived while the plants showed no adveres reaction. before that, i had kept them with a pleco and a salvani without salt in my tank and they did fine with the plants thriving under the same conditions as when i began to add salt. therefore, overall i could see no harmful effects to usuage of salt to going without it. now i keep a mated pair of mollies and they like salt, so i add it regularly. the plants, anubias, java fern and amazons, still thrive and i have to cut my prize sword every 8 weeks as always.
i guess what im saying that in my experience i have never seen the plants react adversely to adding salt to the water. hope that helps.

no plants like salt. try sprinkling a handful of salt on some regular grass.. youll see a dead spot in a few days.

hence, use sparingly if at all.

Salt used to treat a disease for a short period of time may te,mporarily affect a plant but will probably not hurt long term. Short term is say 3 weeks for treating ich.

Long term addition may or may not kill some species but will definately not benefit them.

why the beating around the bush? how much salt would you like to add to your planted tank, and why? if you want some help, give some information...

I recently received 2 tank raised fully fresh water acclimated monos from a friend. He said his adult monos need about 1teaspoon per 5 gal but the juveniles can be totally fresh no salt. So I was wondering if I could keep these fish in a planted tank their whole lives or just for a little while. I am getting 1- 125g tank and either another 125 or something bigger. So I will eventually have a home for them if I decide to keep them.

your talkin monodactylus?/
brackish fish..typically there aren't a lot of plants in this habitat
I hope you have a brackish set up for them
