Salt Creep

Hey all you salties ! I am wondering what the best way to rid aquarium equipment of Salt Creep is..... I have quite the buildup on my filters and aquarium lid. Plus I have the added drag of having very hard water. Thanks ahead of time for any info.

I am guessing that you are running air in the tank. If so, that will be your leading cause of salt creep. If you have plenty of circulation in your tank, there is no need to have air in the tank. Make sure that you have good surface aggitation for O2 exchange.

I don't currently have air running into the tank but it is in the bathroom and the evaporation rate is incredibly high. How do I keep the salt creep from forming and cleaning it all up once it appears? Is it just a matter of scraping and washing in hot water or is there some product out there that will help keep it at bay?

I think your problem is not salt creep, but rather minerals coming out of the water. The few locations are on our tank where we have salt creep are related to surface agitation (water falling into the sump, for example). The salt creep is easily wiped off. Sounds like your white stuff is harder, and not salt, if it requires scraping.

Maybe filtering the water to soften it? Removing some of the minerals that aren't needed for the tank would likely help a bit.

All salt creep is saltwater that has splashed up onto a drysurface. The water then evaporates and what is left behind is the salt and other minerals.

Unlike hard water stains salt creep does not encrust on the surface but can easily be removed by your hand or a damp rag.

If you want to compair you could get a little bit of water and put it on a plate. Let the water evaporate over a day or so and you will be left with the salt creep.

If you know your water is hard I would investigate a RO unit to help filter out those hard metals from your water,
