I am considering converting my 180l tank to salt water for 2 clown fish. I have the added external filter and stimmer for this but am wondering if the nitrifying bacteria for fresh water are the same for salt water? i.e. would i have to cycle my tank again before i purchase my fish?

In saltwater, most people use live rock as their biological filter (it's the most complete) Otherwise, they are different bacteria. You'll need to cycle the tank. Marineland does make a Bio-spira for marine tanks. I'd just go with the live rock and skimmer.

Ok no problem. Am having trouble getting hold of live rock tho. Plus its really expensive in the UK! Even on ebay. Will have to just go for the complete cycle again. :-(

I would stock the tank very lightly and/or larger, more frequent water changes. Without the live rock, your system will be less effecient. Make sure you get a good/powerful skimmer also. This will help reduce the waste that needs to be "processed"

I will only be keeping the 2 clown fish in the tank... thinks its 50 Gallon US, and they will be juvenilles... Protein skimmer is on ebay at moment tho will have to save for the live rock :-(. Pity I cant just go to shore and grab some (cold water sadly). Thanks for ur help kim
