Salt in a freshwater tank??

PetCo uses salt to cut down on disease spreading in fish in their tanks

(I use to work there) and I wouldnt trust what they tell people

Salt does absolutely nothing to "cut down on disease".

I agree salt is not needed. I was at one of our LFS awhile back and they were preaching to everybody that all F.W. fish need 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons of water. This guy also said that to make brackish water all you need is 1 tablespoon aquarium salt for every gallon.:headshake2:

Len, I didnt say it did, Im saying thats why they put it there..I dont agree..its just done..And I got fired for trying to make things better..but hey, Ive moved on and up :-D

Well the only reason I am using salt now is because I had read around on the internet and had been told by other people it was beneficial to the fish for the electrolytes and disease recovery and prevention. At the time that I was told salt was beneficial my Angelfish had white fungus on the tail that seemed to be because of rot. The fungus did go away and I just kept on using it, but I guess I'll stop now since you guys seem to be having luck without it...:werd:

What should I do with my leftover salt??? Ill just sprinkle it on my eggs... :perv:

Thanks guys n girls

I wouldn't do anything with your salt other than keep it around. Regardless of whether it's useful as a general tonic or not, salt / heat is one of the most reliable treatment protocols out there for ich. Just keep it on hand in case you ever need it.

:iagree:

salt has many beneficial properties.

often used to combat illness, relieve nitrite stress , ich, often used on stressed fish,
bacteria and parasites do not fare well in salted water(except those that have had time to adapt(marine).

but like others.. unless you are treating for something.. don't use it.

Salt is often mis understood as minerals (existing as salts) are beneficial to fish(some more than others)

Awesome, will do. So if I were to have any infections or diseases of any kind, what would be the recommended dosage in that case?

If you have any diseases or infections, go to the disease section of the forum and give a good description of the problem so people can help you. The question you just asked was like asking how much lipitor to take for any human illness. There is no general purpose medication and the specific medication and dose depends on what the problem is. (BTW lipitor is a treatment for high cholesterol)

Well I only ask because the box of salt says 1 tbsp per 5 gallons, and other people say different things
