Salt in water

I am a little confused about the amount of salt to add. On the carton of aquarium salt I have it says to add 1 rounded tablespoon per 5 gallons, which is about 1 teaspoon a gallon for regular FW non-sick tanks. Is this way too much salt? I know other people who use this same amount.

It's Iodide not Iodine, _ine (I2) is an antiseptic and would likely be harmful to add to the tank, _ide (I-) is an ion and is not harmful, at least, not in the conc. present.

silicates = sand, not harmful
