As many of you people know, I accidentally overdosed on salt when treating ich. I dosed the equivelant of 10 teaspoons per gallon. While doing a massive waterchange to bring the salt back down to 3 teaspoons per gallon, I pulled up an enormous amount of empty snail shells. Seems like my shelled friends are gone though I am sure their eggs will eventually hatch and replace the population. My fish are fine, and my shark seems to be doing better with the lower concentration of salt. He is back to chasing other fish around the tank instead of just hanging out in his cave. Ich spots are still visible on some fish though the numbers have definately gone down. My Amazon Sword still does not seem to notice the salt even after the ridiculously high salt concentration in the tank for about 36 hours. My vallisneria looks terrible almost shriveled with some yellowing hopefully the lower salt will reverse this. All the fish are alive even though this high salt concentration should have dehydrated them a bit (fish blood has a salinity of 0.9% and I a concentration of 1.0%) the 0.3% salt should quickly reverse this though. All the fish are eating which is a good sign. I now have to deal with the consequences of a salt overdose in the terms of a biofilter. The ammonia bacteria stilll seem to be working since Nitrite keeps going up so I expect the ammonia to crash very soon. The salt will counteract the Nitrite poisoning + the waterchanges I will have to do. Hopefully things get back to normal fast. I've added another filter to this tank so that I never have any possibility of QT breakdown again. Any problems with the QT = one of these filters being transferred over to the QT tank.
