NaCl has no place in your freshwater tank. the addition of NaCl to your system can wreak havoc on your fish, some species more than others. fish such as sailfin mollies will show no effects because they have adapted to life in saltier water then other fish. corydoras or pleco species, however, do not appreciate any added NaCl to their water at all; most Amazonian fish and African Rift Lake fish do not like salt in their water for long periods of time either.

So are you saying all of our tanks aren't 'thriving' because we don't add salt? My fish and plants are doing very well without the salt. I would even say they are thriving.

:) I fail to see where I suggest that salt will make everyone's tanks thrive...

Instead, I am merely offering evidence that salt *can* help, and offering food for thought for those who would like to take it into consideration (as opposed to just a blanket "no").

Notice also that most of the arguments against salt stem from:

"I don't add it and nothing bad happens, so it must be a waste to add it."

Please see the fault in the logic. *technically* we could survive eating wheat germ and taking vitamins...but by eating a proper diet, we thrive - which is what I hope for my fish and plants.

I really don't see how the two are related. We aren't talking about our fishes' diets here. My fish do thrive on a well rounded diet, btw...as do I. ;)

Point is, my fish aren't suffering from a lack of salt. I see no fault in that logic at all.

If your water quality is already generally good with negligible almost unmeasurable amounts of sodium chloride, with reasonable low amount of other minerals so that your TDS is moderately low, why would you change a good thing when change is not good as far as most fish are concerned. Water chemistry stability for long term acclimation and consistent health is key. Adding something extra you don't have to is a recipe for future disaster when you forget to add it or add too much IMO.
