Salt Treatment

ok. i have been reading this entire thread, and i did this 1 tsp per gal and to me, it seems like a huge amount of salt. (any ERAU guys im a pilot not a AE) i filled a 20 oz bottle with just salt before mixing with water from the tank and that was only 1 tsp per gal. you are recommending 2 tsp and i am worried about my fish. true he is a chiclid, and isnt exactaly made of glass, but hes not made of steel either. (75 gal) i am just worried that i am adding too much, or too little. and i do have a tsp on hand

I routinely recommend 2 tsp per gallon, and have used higher concentrations. Slowly add it over a day and make sure it is well dissolved before going in the tank.

Take a look at how much salt is needed to actually make brackish and marine conditions. 1-2 tsp per gallon doesn't even come close.

And don't foget, this is only a short term situation. Once the ich is gone, the water gets returned to regular, with less salt.

ok... i just see this cloud of concentrated salt water going into the tank and when my oscar swims through it he goes belly up for a sec and then swims as fast as he can to the other side of the tank and usually bashe into it real good

I put my salt in a cup of tank water stirring and letting it sit for a hour, keep stiring again, let sit, stir and when its clear then put it in. it should not be cloudy, mine wasn't
the only stupid thing I did was add the first 10 tsp's the first hour, and the second 10 the 2 hours later. nothing happened, my fish look fine, but I needed to add slowly like these folks mentioned :wall:

well i guess i am adding very concentrated ammounts. the water is cloudy before i add it, prob about 20 tsp in 1 liter of water

Check some of the links I provided - there are some varying opinions on the concentration of salinity required. However, as long as you don't have corys and/or loaches, it sounds like you are fine. I raised my temp to 84 over about 2 days and added what ended up being about 1.5 tsp/gal. I was a bit conservative because I was concerned about the tetras.

I lost the angels - too far gone when I started - but my bleeding heart tetras are great. They got a few spots of ich, but then it went away. Make sure the salt is disolved well - even if, I noticed a bit of cloudiness for a few seconds after I put it in. Just be sure to continue salt and heat for a week after ich disappears of fish to make sure you are killing all of the ich. (Read about ich life cycle.) After that, start reducing temperature and doing incremental water changes.
