saltwater aquarium

Who said it is a must have? I said they would definitely need it, it makes life easier, less water changes, mother nature's filtration, how could you not need that? I guess some people do but is not near as realistic and a lot more maintanence goes into those tanks than is necessary. Especially with keeping such a big fish as the white tipped Shark, you will need TONS of other filtration needs to keep up with the amount of waste those fish produce. I would much rather opt for primarily live rock and then some supplemental filtration too. JMHO!
Based on your comments tullsterx, you must not have live rock in your tanks...Right? How many tanks do you have, what is the stocking level, how much maintanence do you do and what are your water quality levels? Just curious. Anyway hope this helps and good luck!

You: "Your biggest money offset is going to be live rock in which you will definitey need."

Me: See. . . you said that. But, I'm certainly not anti live rock.

Hey! I'm just saying that you can keep a FO tank without "true" live rock. I have done so before.

That said. . . I have been out for a few years. My earlier comments were in reference to my other tank that I had in operation for nearly 4 years with minimal nitrate levels, a CC bed, plenty of lace rock and a fluidized bed filter, a canister filter, running carbon and fine-scrubber, interchanging every few weeks. I made 15% water changes every other week.

I don't want to argue semantics. "Must have" and "definitely need" are sononomous to me.

The NEED for live rock when running FO tanks is new to me. I'll probably look into adding some live rock. But, don't say that I have to have it. But, it sounds like a good thing.

Plus, the guy was talking about being BUGET CONCIOUS. . . live rock is not that.

That is true, that is why I said saltwater might not be ideal. I am just suggesting things to make life easier, doesn't mean anyone has to do them. It is just advice. FO does not require live rock as it is just as it says, Fish Only, whereas FOWLR is Fish Only With Live Rock which are the tanks I prefer, just personal preference :)! Anyway good luck with whatever you decide to do surfer, I commend you for trying to do the best for your fish....wish more fish parents were like that :)!

ok....very helpful. But do I have to drill my tank. I have no clue how to set a dry/wet. Do I have to drill?

i disagree, live rock = job done. no chaning media no cleaning no replacemnet parts no shelf life its a one off expense.

now lighting. Help. Do I need a certain lighting or what? would a coralife freshwater light work? or could I just change the bulbs out if it didn't

If you talk to your lfs they will tell you the truth about saltwater aquariums.(and i dont mean petsmart) go to a local place they are more apt to save you money. As for the live rock you dont need it and i would not invest in it untill you are a lot more experianced.
