Hello,

I've had a tank in planning stages for the previous six months or so. I have finally decided to attempt a saltwater aquarium. Tank was plumbed yesterday. Still have a leak issue to figure out. Probably not ideal - small sump, small skimmer - had issues with size of the stand. Hopefully the fun will start soon.

ToeJam: No, Just used teflon tape (is it the same thing as plumbers tape?) The leak is actually from one of the bulkheads on the return. I lowered the water level to about half way, and am planning to tighten again, and then silicone the seams of bulkheads both inside and outside.

Hmm odd...the rubber seals between the two pieces should be enough..also silicone and acrylic don't mix to well when it comes to sticking ...reason people use Weldon when they make sumps with baffles vs using silicon.

Its very possible its on the threads.. only you know im sure...but its usually the main issue I have heard about from others...and i experienced the same.

Silicone the threads prior to tightening things down is what I was told to do in my case...

I don't know if it will apply to yours... I'd like to know for the heck of it once you discover what that problem is...

ToeJam: It was a more simple issue, thankfully, closer inspection (from above) the bulkhead was not flush with the back panel - it was going in at a slight angle. I loosened and retightened the bulkhead, filled the tank and no leaks thus far. will check again in the morning. took a pic with the fixture on. if things look ok, will start up ro unit for initial water for the tank. Thanks for your help.

No plans for a canopy yet. I have been thinking of asking the woodworker that built the stand for a wooden structure of some sort from which to suspend the light fixture. I have some rough ideas, but will wait until thiings are set up. Maybe a thin wooden frame around the top of the tank to conceal the water line, but with an open top? Right now, just want to get this tank set up right.

Put in the substrate and live rock last night, 200 lbs of each. didn't realize how much rinsing the substrate needed. kept getting bits of brown stuff that looked like bark. here are the pics.

man, that is going to be killer. You got some amazing tonga. 200lbs of tonga must have cost more than my house. That stuff ain't anywhere close to cheap. Very nice. And the stand is amazing. How soon before you start adding stuff? What are the plans?
