Hey, out of curiosity...Could someone who actually lived in a tropical climate have a koi-like pond for saltwater fish???

can't see why not, although I would have mine close to the hose and then viewable via a window through the basement wall.
Aquarium world here in Houston has a very large indoor saltwater pond (they call it a lagoon).

I have an uncle who grew up in the Dominican Republic, where he kept a cement pond with salt water tropical fish. He caught the fish himself (not sure I’d recommend that part, but it’s kind of cool).

I am sure you can, many tank raised or bred salt water fish come from such ponds. Same goes for Clams as well.DeputyChiefJR said:

what about evaporation and rain, how are those going to effect the SG level, lets say suddenly there is a large storm while you are sleeping, the next morning you wake up, the pond is double the size, and the sg is 1.010, all within 8 hours. Then think about evaporation and how it can raise the SG fast. IMO i wouldnt do it. There might be days where the temp goes in the 90's, how are you going to keep it cool?
Those are some good points. So can I take the koi out and put cichlids in? How do they react to temp. change? Sorry to lack so much knowledge on the FW stuff. I'm a SW guy.
