sand and plants?

I have a 29 gallon tank with five african cichlids and one algae eater. I wanted to get some low lighted plants for my tank. Any suggestions what kind I could get that's low light and cichlids won't destroy???

Also, I currently have blue gravel from Walmart. Is that ok for plants? An is it ok for cichlids? It seems when my favorite red zebra that I've had for a few years dug in the gravel it makes his mouth throat area swollen. So I'm wondering if this gravel is ok for my fishies? Or if I should try something else like play sand??? Anyone used play sand or have any other suggestions?

well you could get some coarser coral gravel, it tends to be larger and less abrasive than the other gravel.
plants wise, the java fern, anubias fern, amazon sword plant, along with ludwigea and maybe some lillies as they dont generally need much light as they basically photosynthesise on the surface ( though are a little more delicate than other plants). they should do well under those consditions
if your trying ot fill room with the plants, i ould suggest some rock or wood structures as well, as they can be very attractive in themselves
