Sand as substrate

Thank you for the tips. The sand I used was the sand sold in the pet store. I did wash it quite a lot and this tank has been set up for several months already. I have moved my plantings around to see if that helps with sand dispersal area. I think I'll convert to the pool filter sand. Where do I find it? Home Depot or Lowes?

I think either of the above places will stock it. Maybe if you have a large Walmart nearby even.

I have play sand from Home depot etc. in my tanks. It takes a week or so for it to settle. I stir mine and use old fashioned bottom filters with fishing weights and poly fill to filter out the tiny pieces. It takes some time but once done DONE

pool filter sand is what i use and no problems, not sure why your sand is so light,

That's because you use pool filter sand. Requires less washing. I used play sand and had cloudy water for a week too. Next time I think I'll spend the extea $2 on pool filter sand.

I use pool filter sand, as well. It doesn't compact like play sand does over time. I got mine at Home Depot for about $8 for a 50# bag.
