sand bottomed pond?

That sounds like it would be very attractive, but I wonder if it would be trouble for the circulating pump. Can water plants be planted directly in the sand?

Irrelevant. Koi/goldfish will root out most anything you try to plant with them.

Appearance is exactly the reason I was thinking for doing it. Black bottoms are pretty boring..

Pump will depend on how you set it up. I Think the ideal way to arrange the pump/filtration on a large pond is as follows:

You don't want to be dragging material through the pump if you don't have to. Rather than having the pump be the first element in the system, place it at the end. If your clever, you can position the filtration elements so they are fed by gravity from the pond, so the pump only has to push the water back up to the top of the waterfall/fountain/pond return. This would also keep things sane in the event of a power loss, as there would be no repriming of the pump.

Unless the intake is positioned too close to the sand, or the fish constantly stirr it up it should be an avoidable problem.

I think it would be too hard to keep clean. I have both gold fish and koi and I will be putting in rocks on the bottom, big enough so they cant eat them. jst2
