i am VERY new to salt water aquariums, so please forgive my "BASIC" questions.

i realize that there is sand in the ocean, but when it comes to aquariums, why is the amount of sand SO important? what is the big deal with the amount of sand used? the reason i ask this, lets take fresh water aquariums for example. you put whatever amount of gravel at the bottom of the tank to suit your wants/needs. not that critical (as far as i know), so why is it not the same for salt water tanks? can't you put enough sand/rock to make it look pretty? out of what im seeing, sand is a huge factor...............

could someone please elaborate on this, trying to learn as much as possible before i jump into an aquarium.

thanks

Good question to ask, but there is a great post already discussing this topic. Here's the link. Enjoy!
This link talks about why you shouldn't use crushed coral.

As a word of advice, please read the stickies. I don't say that because I'm rude, I say it so you can get the information you need quicker. Happy reading!

Stickies are the forum posts that are "Stuck" to the top of each seperate forum section so people can see them straight away..

Browse to Marine Newbie Forus, and you will see the stickies at the start of the board...
