i want to go with sand for a substrate, but will that shorten the life of hob filters / powerhead ???

Put a pre-filter sponge over the intake of the filters. Just cut a slit into an Aquaclear sponge and slip it over. Then take off weekly to clean.
Why would sand shorten the life of an HOB or powerhead?
As long as the impellers aren't constantly grinding grains of sand you'll be OK. Most powerhead/HOB intakes are positioned towards the top of the tank away from the substrate anyway.
Most reef tanks run for years with nothing more than the standard plastic intake screen over the powerheads.
