Hello, I am sorry I have another quick question about the gunk that I see in the front of the tank just under the sand level. It is kind of pinkish, brown. How should this be cleaned, do I vac it up when doing water changes? I have read that you do not want to stir the sand. Thanks for the help.
Thanks, I have been on tank restriction lately, lack of extra funds seems to go into the gas tank instead. It is 150 gallon with a 50 gallon sump below. I put up a wall in my basement and and built it in. I still need some finish work on it but it seems that the "honey do list" comes first oh well. I am thinking about just adding a piece of trim along the lower edge just to hide the gunk.umm maybe
most sandbeds have funky stuff growing, it's good stuff i am sure when it's not stirred up..don't stir it up or there will be some seriously bad stuff happening in your tank without a major water change.. looks normal to me
I happen to stir up sections of my sand bed to remove the accumulation of micro-organics ('gunk') in conjuction with my water changes as an additional method of waste-export. I basically stir up the sand and siphon out the cloud of gunk (which would otherwise accumulate over time).
The way I see it, removing it can't be a bad thing (the entire sand bed isn't being disturbed and organic micro-debris is being removed from the system).

But then you would miss out at night when you want to stare with a flash light at the worms, star fish, and other critters moving through the sand bed to eat the gunk. OH wait...is that just me :lipssealedsmilie:

interesting, I didn't think about that, I have read about people using a flashlight to look at life forms at night and tried this once and only saw my fish scatter, I did not see any of the small life, was I using to strong of a light or not waiting late enough for them to come out? Thanks for the thought. ( and yes that would be cool to see )
