I'm planning to get my betta another new home - this time an Eclipse 5 corner. I really want to get sand for this tank, but I don't want to ruin the impeller by having sand sucked into it. How can I go about avoiding this? I've read a few things about prefilters, but it seems like I'd just be rinsing them every week and impeding the actual filter from doing its job. Any thoughts?
I have a Penguin 150 that sucks water from near bottom. I use sand in my tank, and only had a small problem when I restarted it after the initial sanding. Take your sand and soak it in a bucket, stiring it with your hand and keep chainging water till it is like beach sand. Thick and clumpy. I used a measuring cup and put the sand in cup by cup. Slow yes, but it did not cloud the water and went in rather nicely. When I restarted the filter there was a little grinding sound, but after cleaning out the impeller, things have been smooth since. My Corys love it.
Actually I went to Home Depot and out in the outdoor section got a 50lb bag of "Childrens Sandbox" sand. I think it was about $5.00 at the most. I just washed it alot in a bucket and it's been fine.
