sand in the aquariam

mm, it's hard to tell you a brand since you're in Oz, but I got sand used for mixing with cement for $3US. It works very well, just have to wash it out well before hand. Good decidion, I'm never going back to gravel!

Another good sand to get is from a landscaper store. It's called sweep sand, but dont get the colored kind. Just plain regular.

If you are going the pool filter sand route, be sure to make sure there are no additives. I read on a post that some pool sand manufacters put chemicals in thier sand.

i used pool filter sand. and well not every pool filter sand is just sand.

i remember when i first added it, the water tasted funny. (i dont usually taste my tank water, i was making a sipon the old fashioned way)

then testing the prams. the ph was 8 kh 80ppm and gh 10ppm

which is sooo far off my tap water that i knew something was wrong.
called company and they add a chemical to regulate water ph and to suck up "ammonium ions" or something.

This is from another thread!

p.s maybe if the bagged sand has a number call em up.

Here is a thread from a cichlid forum that is very helpful:

cheers,
so if i shoose pool sand, does it go all messy and cloudy like play sand?
Also, if i wanted a white colourd sand, what do have to choose from, i was interested in silica sand but after reading fish freaks post, i was wondeering if there are other availibilities?
will this sand sink strait to the bottom? or will it make a big cloud when i put it in the tank?

you'll have to rinse and wash the sand a couple of times to get the light debris and dust out. and after you put it in the tank, it should still be a bit cloudy as the sand is still settling, but eventually even the lightest particle will sink.
