I use to use sand, I think I prefer it over the flourite I'm using now. It was no good for the plants.. well, I thought at the time.. now I know better
here are a couple of pictures:
First one is when the tank's sand was new..:

Then a couple later with added gravel to help the plants.. from different perspectives.

Just so you know, when I had one tank with gravel and one with sand the Corys wouldn't go to the gravel side, at all. Sand also adds some cool possibilities for certain species of fish. I had a Banjo Cat that would burrow in the sand and some freshwater flounders that would completely disapear under the sand, they loved the stuff.
edit: In the second pick there is some sand mixed with the gravel and in the third it is almost completely gone.. the filter will, over time, suck up the sand.. but it takes a while to notice any difference.
Also notice the discoloration deeper into the sand bed, some have said the bacteria that causes it release toxic gasses that can hurt your fish. I never had any trouble though
