i have sand in my 90g right now, but cleaning with the python is difficult in sand. i want to switch to rocks, but find it hard to justify paying $60 for it. should i stay with the sand or make the change??? thanks

With sand, you don't dig in with the gravel vac, just go over the top of the sand to pick up the debris on top. The compactness of the sand will prevent most of the debris from sinking below the surface.

No need to spend $60 for rocks, go to lowes or home depot, buy some rock, rinse it really well, and you're good to go. I refuse to by substrate from the LFS lol...

I use pool filter sand in my sand bottom tanks and it's easy to clean with the python because the sand is fairly coarse.

This is really a matter of what will make you happy. I went through two types of gravel before I decided I wanted to do a planted tank and then made a third switch to Fluorite. Both times I made the switch I did it because the gravel I thought I'd love, just ended up not looking right and I knew I wasn't going to be happy with my tank until I made the change.

If it is worth it to you in time and money, but more importantly will allow you to enjoy your tanks more, then I say make the switch. After all this is a hobby and I want my hobby to make me happy.

This seems more like a matter of what do you want. Yes it can be hard to clean the sand but do you like the sand look more then grave/rock?

I myself would go with what I want. If I cared more for the sand then I would find ways to make it easier to clean. Yes gravel is much easier to clean but some people just don't like the look. It is all a matter of what you are willing to do. If you can handle the hassels of the sand then keep it, if not go with the gravel.

If the price is a problem then just keep the sand and slowly buy the gravel. You could buy a little gravel at a time until you had the amount you needed then switch it over.

Just my 2 cents.
