Sand questions

Hey, crushed coral will be fine for FW, but you have to be careful because it will raise you ph on you. But you are right it is sickenly expensive. As for the sand, I was kind of in a jam, the guy I bought that tank from decided he wanted to keep his substrate... so I had no time to do anything, clean the sand, let it settle, nothing, because I had to get the fish back into the tank pronto. All I did was put the sand in the tank, put a glass plate on top of it and slowly poured the water onto the plate, I was expecting it to be severly cloudy, but I was shocked that it wasn't at all. I may have lucked out and got super clean sand, but I think the real key is to just add the water gently as to not upset the sand too much.

A good sand question if i may....how about tank cleaning? I can't imagine that you would do it the same way as gravel vacing or do you? Seems that you would be losing sand?

Any thoughts of a sand/gravel mixture? Just curious.

IMO, sand and gravel mixtures dont look so good. As for gravel vacuuming, a technique i've used in sand tanks is to stir the sand, letting the debris fly all around and vacuuming it then.

crushed coral shouldnt be used in freshwater tanks EVER, unless its an african cichlid tank.

First off, I have been to Lowes, Home Depot and Westlake Hardware but they only stock roughly 2-3 types of playsand and some of them contain silica which from my research is not safe for fish...

Most all regular sand is silica (silicon dioxide SiO2) based, also refered to as quartz sand.

I have finally decided and bought some back sand (Tahitian Moon) today. It is actually a bit too fine (and too expensive) than I would have liked. I did consider Eco-complete sand for African cichlids but decided against it due to potential PH problems. Let's see how my first sand experience will turn out.

Last Saturday we went to a pool store and all they had was silica based sand, I'm in no hurry so I'm still looking for exactly what i want,...:)
