alright! so i have decided to get, instead of gravel, sand substrate for my 75 gal, but my only question is that won't it get sucked up by the filter? and when i clean it with one of those suction pump-things, won't it all get sucked out?

Let the sand settle before you turn on the filter otherwise you risk damaging the filter when the sand gets sucked. Vacuum just over the sand a few inches apart enough to let the detritus get sucked up without sucking the sand.

ok. alright. but when the sand is settled, it won't get sucked out by the filter?

What kind of sand did you get? I used playground sand from HomeDepot in a tank awhile back. It was fairly coarse and didn't get sucked up.

I would also recommend washing the heck out of it before putting it in.

That particular sand is fairly fine, about the same as the video above. That's actually a decent vid to watch to give you a feel for it.

I actually had that MoonSand in a 10 gallon of mine. Because the tank was so small I found I could keep too much sand from leaving by plugging the outflow if it sucked any up. For a 75 that won't really work. But a bucket fixes that problem well!

I use pool filter sand in mine, big enough to not get sucked up and small enough to look like sand*, and it is wayyy cleaner than play sand IMO. 50pound bag for 9.99 at leslie's pool supply.

Ditto (except I paid a bit more) - #20 Pool Filter sand - the lower the #, the coarser it is. Also - the filter dangers apply to internal & HOB filters. No self respecting canister will ever let sand get to its impellor (so go buy one).
