Sand substrate?

If the vacuum does start to suck up the sand there should be a valve to turn off the suction. Do that until the sand drops then continue.

It's a Fluval Osaka 260 tank (70 gal). 42" X 18" X 24" high. Filtered by 2 AC 110 HOBs. Lighting: 2 X 39w T5 HOs.
Maintenance: 2 X weekly 60% wcs, with good tank wipedown & filter media cleansing, substrate vac, plant trimming, etc. Water clarity maintained with Purigen, along with filter floss, and pre-filters on intake tubes.
Plant ferts: Root tabs twice yearly, weekly dosings of Excel, Flourish C.S., Trace, Tailored Aquatics, NPK.
Anything else you'd like to know ?
Another good sand is the Ultra Marine Sand from Estes. It doesn't compact, its inert, and most importantly (for me) its cheap!
