Sand to use for Freshwater Tank?

I am converting my tank from rock to sand. I have read threads that suggest using silica sand, I have read posts that say to use agronite sp* sand, and I just read one that says to use pool filter sand. Please tell me which is correct. I dont really know which to believe? Please help soon,

I use regular 'playsand' form home depot. You can use any of the sand you listed, but some will raise your ph, i.e. the aragonite sand (not sure if silica doe this). I believe some like pool filter sand because it is a larger grain, and it is a uniform white color. Generally aragonite and silica are popular in saltwater.

I use play sand in most of my tanks, and my fish absolutely love it! I haven't had any problems with health or water parameters. Plus you can get 50 lbs for a couple bucks, thats a little better price then the stuff at lfs.

Pool filter is the same as silica. Its cheaper if you buy it at a pool supply store than at you LFS. To my knowledge it is neutral and shouldn't mess with your water parameters.

I thought that pool filter sand was too sharp for the aquarium.... one of the reasons you can't use any other sand for the filter (on pools) is because of the sharpness of the grain, being that it's glasslike..... that's not the case? meaning, it's ok for the home aquaria?

I've never heard of pool filter sand being sharper than silica. The great thing about itis you don't have to rinse it as much. I've heard of many people buying PFS, instead of silica at the LFS. I'll look into the sharpness and post what i get.

Home Depot Play sand, just pre filter your filters.

Pool filter sand isn't too sharp. I double checked anyways. Its silica based, has less rinsing involved, cheaper, and heavier (easier to clean).

Silica sand can cause problems with brown algae, because silica is its main food source.
