what do you think? im tired of all the crap in the gravel..i was thinking it wouldnt be a good idea since our one catfish tends to dig under the ornaments. i thought maybe that would stir up the sand too much? also we have a hot magnum on the tank, if we could use sand, would we have to change the filter?

I have a new USD cat in a QT that's just sand. I've not noticed him(her?) stirring things up. Usually it's me doing that when I clean up after it. I have noticed that ever since a big sand storm I created that my whisper is making a funny noise. The other QT tank, which also has sand, hasn't had that problem but I didn't create a sand storm in that tank...

What type of catfish? I don't think your catfish would stir up too much sand... it actually helps if they burrow to you don't get anaerobic pockets. If you have a lot of gunk in your gravel, you may be overfeeding and not cleaning often enough, just a thought.

I have plenty of catfish in several tanks and I never had a problem with them stirring up the sand to the point where the tank would get clouded or anything like that. The catfish (cories, small plecos) will, of course, stir the sand up slightly as they look for food, but that's all. It has never clouded the water or led to any kind of mess.
