Hey... I just got some black sand at our LFS. It is safe for fresh or marine tanks. I have a fresh water tank. Do I rinse the sand before I put put it in the tank?
Rinse it very thoroughly. There are a lot of tiny particles that can clog the filter, fish gills and cloud the water if you don't. Two or three good rinses should do it, or until the water runs clean.
I am curious as to how you rinse sand? I put black sand in a tank I set up couple years ago and didnt really now the best way to do it. I just dumped all the sand in , set my colander on it and filled the tank with water. I let it settle for a day or so and then did a couple 50% or so water changes.
There are two main ways to do it. One is to use a bucket and a water hose, spray it and let all the floating stuff come to the top and pour it out or use a bowl and fill it part way, stick your hands in and start swishing it around, then empty the water and do it over again.
The bowl method allows more control and less loss of sand but the bucket method is faster and easier with larger amounts of sand.
