sand

Not bad if you simply rinse with fresh water, but you shouldnt need to even syphon the sand out of a marine tank. If you have some hermit crabs or some snails they basically clean everything for you. Depending on the size of your tank you could even invest in a goby and they will keep yoursand spotless. In my opinion by removing the Sand bed or syphoning it out and cleaning it is doing more harm than good. The point of your sand bed is for little micrscopic life to live in to help filter the water. By removing the sand and cleaning it your removing most of if not all the life from the sand that you need.

k thanks i only have a 10 gallon so i can't get another fish and my hermits and snails won't touch any of the algae on the sand. They are either on the glass or in the rocks at all time. I 've heard of some sort of mexican snail. Will that do the trick because what i was syphoning out was the red slime algae.

Cerith snails and mexican hermit crabs are a good choice for red slime algae. However, red slime algae is a sign of one of a few problems with a marine aquarium. It would probably be better in the long run to fix one of the problems thats causing the algae blooms rather than try to hide it.

i have no idea what is causeing this algae. Its not phospates, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, becasue all those levels are good. My Ph is good and calcium levels are fine. I have good flow. THe only thing i think it could be is that i have 96 W pc lights on my ten gallon. BUt who knows

the reason why all your nitrates, phosphates, and such are all 0 is because the cyano bacteria is eating it up... if you have cyano, then it is there.
siphoning out your sandbed will actualy help the cyano because you are removing the bacteria also which is what compete with cyano. it is okay to remove it, but dont bring sand along with it.
