Was kind of curious to get some of your inputs on sand beds. I noticed that a lot of people use regular sand beds (2" to 3") or dsb (3"+) but not much talk of plenums. There was one reference that i saw but it was more in line of a question than a declaration of use.

(For clarification in case people call it something else)
When I worked at the local fish store we would set up a customer’s tank like so (and our own plus the one reef i had growing up): first adding an under gravel filter plate only, cover with screen, add a layer of aragonite crushed coral about an inch to two inches thick, cover with screen and finally a layer of sand (mixed live & small grain aragonite sand). It made a sand bed about 3 to 5" thick but with a tank stand that had a lip most of it would be concealed.

Was just wondering if anyone did this as well, if not why? Are there any big proponents of not doing this? We actually used egg crate for one of our larger 300g tanks that we used as a coral tank along with our 350g display only tank. It worked wonders for us but maybe it was because it was established for about 5 years. Would love to hear your guys’ (and gals ;)) opinions :).

I used to do so many years ago but after having read a study on the actual effects or benefits of using a plenum I decided that future tanks would not have one as plenums have been shown to be of no actual use or capable of making a difference per water quality. What ever is supposed to be happening under a plenum is going to happen in the sandbed anyways.
