sandbox sand

I use Pool Filter sand. It's a bit larger grained than some sand, is cleaner right out of the package than Play sand and I find it works well enough for plants. I keep mollies and use no filter intake cover other than the stock, slotted-plastic ones or sometimes a filter sponge for a sponge filter that I like to keep cycled for my q-tank. I have no filtration problems and could not be happier with how well sand works... well, sometimes it's a bit tough to get a plant in place, but roots grow so fast and easy in sand, it usually doesn't matter much. Best of luck.

I used play sand from Lowes, only because pool sand is not in season in Chicago. :D I really don't like playsand, because it's too fine. It took almost a full day for it to settle when I first put it in the tank.

does it look as nice as pool sand though?
Some play sand I have seen looks nice. Some I have seen looks too red in coloration. The play sand I have seen and used for reptiles came in paper bags so you'd have to stab the bag and sample a small amount to see the color. The Pool Filter Sand I used came in clear bags and I could see the color. Also, the color lightened up under the flourescent light of my tank. I think it looks nice.

I just bought sand from home depot...called "tube sand" came in a tube shaped bag. Doesnt have a reddish color....is this considered play sand?

tube sand is used for weight, sand bag style. i too use playbox sand purchased at lowes, 50 lbs for about 3 bucks. A bit too fine for my liking but my africans love it.
