saragassum sp

Sorry, but there are lots of critters and plants that are called 'sargassum'--can you be more specific?

PS

You just said saragassum dont forget the sp at the end.

"sp" indicates species. Sargassum refers to an aquatic grass that grows in large 'fields'--animals that are found in these areas are often named a Sargassum species. Sargassum anglers, sargassum damsels, sargassum shrimp, Sargassum pipefishes, etc. Just saying something is a Sargassum species doesn't indicate what type of animal you're talking about, just that it's a sub-species that inhabits Sargassum grasses.

Here's the list from Fish Base of fish with Sargassum in their common name. By no means inclusive, since common names are often assigned at the LFS.

Sargassum is a genus of brown macroalgae, with a fairly varied collection of species. As OrionGirl mentioned, "sp" just means they don't know what species it is. Some live attached to rocks, some live quite nicely in floating masses. The Sargasso Sea is a mass of floating Sargassum.

Care for most species is pretty straightforward as long as there is enough light. It seems to do well under standard reef tank conditions, with low nutrients and good water quality. Once established, it can grow fast, many species grow large, and few herbivores eat it, so it can become a bit of a pest.

Where did the stuff come from? If you post a pic, I can try to key it out for you.

Heh heh--and here I was thinking that is was likely a fish, not a grass/algae. :) Comes from spending too much time looking at pictures of Sargassum anglers, I guess.
