I want to cry!

I'm so upset!

I got back to work this morning to find my betta tank that is usually 82f at 70f!

this is the second time and it was of course a long weekend so Arised is showing obvious signs of disease. normally he swims constantly all day he's lingering near the surface and there's a bit of fin rot visable on the edges of his fins!

We had our phone systems overhauled on Friday so only the office manager was here- and she took it upon herself in her boredom to organize all my papers and stacks (i can't find anything this AM. . .GRRRR) so i'm sure she accidentally turned the nob or something

the last time i was gone for three days the same thing happened some one turned the heat down it was 64f when i got in and Hiawatha was dead the next day he was is such bad shape from the shock, mind you he was an older betta so his immune system wasn't as strong. that time Arised was fine- no signs of a problem with him but this time . . .

I'm so furious! his tank had it's weekly 50% change on thursday he was in great shape

i did another water change this morning as soon as i got into my office and found him moping in the top corner. the tank is being treated with maracyn and the heat is almost back up to normal (i don't want to do it too fast) he's in a ten gallon all by himself and . . .

I TRY TO TAKE SUCH GOOD CARE OF HIM . . . IT'S SOOOOOO FRUSTRATING TO HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO HIM!

sorry for the long pointless post i guess i just needed to tell you all because you'll understand where i'm coming from.

peace-Kyle

We are in the process of moving to a new building which will give me a bigger office and I was thinking about getting a 5g tank for a betta to keep in my office, but now I'm not so sure. I hate to get one just to have it sabotaged when I am gone and having the poor fishie die on me over the weekend. Hmmmm......

i have a particularly obnoxious manager and as long as you have a private office that people actually respect, i.e. they're not always in there when you're not you'll be just fine.

i set up this tank when i'd only been here 2 weeks and i think if Arised recovers and has been well for a couple weeks i'll move it home- i'll miss having him at work for sure . . . maybe upgrading to a submersable heater is the way to go. . .

anyway you should have a tank at work- it's so great to glance over at him between emails and spreadsheets as long as you can be sure no one will be able to easily disturb the tank equipment-

I purposefully have a really light bioload so that the tank is more stable

anyway consider your situation b/c it's prob a bit different grom mine.

cheers- Kyle

Thanks for the advice Kyle. If I do go with the tank, I will stick with only a betta and maybe some ghost shrimp in the tank. My only concern would be the cleaning crew. But so far they dont ever seem to clean my desk!! LOL anyway.....I hope you have better luck with your betta. They are so wonderful!!! Everytime I am at walmart, or any LFS I scan thru them and wish I could take them all home. Poor babies.

our secretary here wanted to liven up the office a bit and took it upon herself to buy 2 bettas and put thme into those plant vases where the plant is held in place atthe neck and just the roots dangle down into the water. she changed the water when the water got low on the plants (seems like about every 2 weeks), but fed them every day (except weekends of course). they had probably 1 gallon of water each, which would be enough if she was keeping the water healthy, but despite my advice that she needed to do frequent water changes to keep them healthy in those little vases it didn't happen.

one lasted 1 week. the other hung on for about 2 months before it died.

If you have your own office having a tank is nice. Cube farms are not good because anyone can mess with your pet.

I love working near my tank, it relaxes me to watch the fish, but then again I have a home office!

Is there any way to put a cap on top of your heater knob so it won't get bumped?

Having a submersible heater would probably help....most people wouldn't be willing to get all wet to cause trouble (if it was intentional) and if it was accidental, it would prevent that as well because the adjustment knob would be out of reach.

I'm assuming it was accidental , for the time being i've scotch taped it in place and i'm going to stop at the pet store on the way into work tomarrow for the submersable. that way Arised won't have to be troubled with a move after recovering . . . if he recovers.
