Saw fish at walmart

My local WalMart is probably better than my lfs.

They both have diseased and dead fish, but the lfs tends to pass on bad information, while Walmart usually says "I don't know".

The lady at the lfs insists that I need to adjust my ph in order for my fish to survive. All the while I'm bringing her fry that I raised in that same water.

She tells me a 10gal tank is big enough for convicts and a twenty is big enough for parrotfish.

I just nod and ignore her.

I just discovered the Wal-Mart by me has about 15 tanks of fish. Yeah it sucks when the person selling you the fish knows jack. I went there the other day and wound up helping 3 people in the fish section. I must say they had a few nice malawi mbuna, white with black stripes. I was tempted to buy one and I was surprised they had a pricing system that told you which fish you can put together, anything ending in 4 could go together, 5, etc. They were accurate too.

I was in WalMart last night and as usual I found myself drifting away from the wife and into the pet department. Wish I hadn't though. Just put me in a bad mood.

The other day at my wal-mart I came across what someone must've thought hilarious, that is, taking the bettas out of their individual cup-size prisons and putting two together in one so they would fight, no doubt. :sad

i was horrified and went to get a net from the sink so as to return them to their individual cups but every single net was full of dead fish scooped from the tanks. i ended up rinsing off my hand and just scooping the fish up myself.

One of the wal marts that is local for me(45 min. Highway drive to either), used to have a VERY horrendous fish dept., and I made a comment to a stranger who was back there about the horrid conditions that the fish were in, that I wouldn't buy from any place that has the ba!!s to treat an animal like that. Thought nothing of it, till I was checking out, and turns out that the guy that was back there was a district manager, and he was talking very sternly to the store manager, and asked me to describe to the manager what I had told to him back by the fish, so I did! Now, 4 weeks later, I was at the store again, and I must say, they have done a 180! There are decorations in the tanks, live plants in every tank, no dead fish, and NO SICK FISH! I was shocked!

Also, about wal-mart not knowing anything about the fish that they sell, I feel better about buying a fish from somebody who will tell me "I don't know, do you have any way to find out before you buy them?"(what I was told the last time I went to get fish), VS my LFS telling me that a BGK(my GF commented on how "cute" it was, and that she wanted one)would be just fine in my 29 gal.! I made the comment that he would eat his way through the tank, and then I would still have to get a bigger tank for him. To that, she said,(the LFS owner) well, he will only eat pellets!

Never been to look at Walmart's fish, but I did look at the fish at the local Meier's (kind of a grocery store/department store/super Walmart kind of place) the other day.

I suspect management has realized that if you just leave the floaters in the tanks, you don't have to put any fish food in there. Saves money and cleanup!

Nasty place...

Yeah, we have Meijer rather than Wal-mart in my area as well. Much like your experience, they had some pretty distgusting tanks there when I went and looked around.

I must give them some credit though because my roomate was able to find some really cool plastic and silk plants there for his 5 gallon that I've never seen anywhere else (he was looking for some really exotic colors)

my meijers fish are fine they are always healthy.... i have only ever seen one dead one there. and no diseases. although they dont give a lot of info on them. thats why i have u guys

My walmarts fish has improved and there used to be a lot of dead fish sucked into the intake on the filters and they also could not sell fish for about 2 months due to disease but they look good now but I would not buy them from there.

FYI, if you ever see fungus on fish, its most likely not a fungus, its a bacterial infection, known as "the dreaded" flexibacter. u can (probably) diagnose flexi if you notice sores on the mouth, or that fungus-looking growths beginning on the fish's mouth, and eventually covering much of the body, and in later stages, it looks like the skin is flaking off of the fish. flexi is usually found when there is overfeeding and not cleaning the tank often enough, and is almost always associated with poor maintenence, or at least, not-good-enough maintenence on your tank. (im not flaming on anyone, ive had it before too) if you want the whole scoop on flexi, check this page out.

BTW, sorry for changing the topic! haha
