saw rams for a buck today(sold out)

BTW, I bought my german blue ram pair for $20 and they were worth every penny. They were spawned locally in hard and alkaline water and are thriving for me and growing very fast. I think you really get what you pay for with $1 rams and I have a feeling that most are asian imports and won't do very well in the long run. Hopefully I'm wrong, though. :)

Sorry, didn't mean to insult. I actually like Petsmart, and shop there often. I like their long guarantee on fish purchases, the fact that they match online prices, and that they accept returns of items ordered throught Petsmart.com even though they aren't stocked in-store.

BUT, I often hear the staffers there confidently give other customers advice that I know to be flat wrong. I'm sure there is plenty of correct advice given.

AND, some of the fish I have purchased there have not been exactly top quality from a genetic standpoint.

The above is no different from any chain or local LFS.

I like the fact that Petsmart keeps their plants in separate tanks, but wish they didn't keep any fish in there. Why do they do that? Is that standard policy?

$1 rams had to be some sort of mislabeling or pricing error.

Here in Southern Wisconsin, they sell from $12. a piece for local bred blue rams (mine!) to between $8-9 for the imports. The sad thing is... I only get $2.50 per fish... Our Petsmart won't buy local bred fish, and they don't have rams.

On another note, many times the POP signage at the Petsmart ticks me off. You just can't tell people they can keep iridescent sharks in a 30g... stuff like that bugs me.

To all you lfs employees out there. There is a TON of information that we all have to learn about many different kinds of fish. Way too much to keep track of - so I don't hold it against any of you!!! I wouldn't be able to do the job or answer questions correctly every time either.

If I could change one thing that lfs's do, it would be to properly train their employees and their customers about cycling a tank. Don't sell them the fish to go with their new tank. Instead, give them some sort of voucher as part of the aquarium package, along with an agreement to do free testing, even give them the test tubes to bring back/forth, etc. Become indispensable to the new aquarium owner...

Guess I got off the subject...

I get amusement from the fact that the manager's special always seems to be bala sharks. Highly recommended.

It really offends me when people say things like this. I work in the aquatics department at Petsmart and while I do agree that there are a couple of people working with me who don't know anything about fish (both are new employees) majority of those working in my department know a good deal about fish keeping.

And as for the fish being culls, impossible. Petsmart has there own fish breeders where they get only the best fish, not culls. The reason the fish are only a dollar is because, just like every other big name store, we are having a sale. Neon tetras, assorted platies, red minor tetras, and african dwarf frogs are also on sale for a dollar but only if you have a pet perks card. Please get your facts straight before you go about bashing something you know nothing about.

I'm curious as to where this petsmart is located, my petsmart doesn't even have rams right now.

actually, petsmart won't get the best..here's why.

the breeders retain the best to maintain the breed stock. so in essence they are culls.
as the breeders need to keep the best in order to increase the frequency of quaity fish.

that said..have you ever been to a breeder?

if you have you will see a quality of fish that surpasses most all LFS.

the breeder feed the fish several times per day and clean the tanks daily.
the fish at reputable breeders are extremely heathy..so healthy it's very difficult determine which are the best they are willing to part with.

I got my 6 rams at pet supermarket yesterday..the price was $7.99 each..I told the guy I saw them at another LFS for $5.99..He said let me ask the Mngr. she would prob drop the price..she did I bought the only 6 they had for $5.99 each..they are awesome..hopefully I got some females in the mix

my petsmart doesn't keep any fish in with the plants. totally separate.

Most large breeders don't have the time todecide what is a cull and what isn't. Bag 'em and out the door. When you are breeding at the scale to supply chain stores, it isn't to develop quality stock.

Our local store had the same on some rams at a $1 buck apiece and are doing great in my son's tank.

This week, red minor tetras, most as long fins, 6 for a buck.
